FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 4, 2026

TCSO Investigating Austin’s Colony-Area Homicide

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after two people were shot, one fatally, at an Austin’s Colony-area residence late Tuesday morning.

The suspect has been identified as Courtney Leander Nation, 49, of Austin. He is charged with murder. The victim is the suspect’s sister, Cynthia Rios Juarez, 63, of Round Rock.

TCSO Dispatch received a 911 call just before 11:30 a.m. from a woman reporting a domestic disturbance and shooting at a residence on the 4500 block of Secure Lane. Upon arrival, deputies located Cynthia Juarez and Courtney Nation with gunshot wounds. Juarez’s injuries were obviously serious and CPR was initiated immediately. Efforts to save her life were ultimately unsuccessful and she was pronounced deceased on scene at 12:01 p.m. Nation was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

TCSO’s initial investigation indicates Nation shot his sister and was then shot by his brother. Detectives continue to conduct interviews with family members who were on scene to determine the motive behind Nation’s actions. No charges are pending against the brother who shot Nation at this time.
