TCSO Reports Death in Custody After Crash on FM 969

On Sunday, May 14, 2023, TCSO deputies responded to the area of 10100-10506 FM 969 Road after receiving calls about a multi-vehicle collision at 3:59 p.m.
When deputies arrived, citizens were attempting to gain control of, and assist a male driver identified as 26-year-old Jose Jacobo Melgar-Menjivar, who appeared to be in an altered mental state on the scene. TCSO was able to detain him and determined he needed medical treatment.

Melgar-Menjivar was then handed into the care of Austin-Travis County EMS. During treatment, he suffered a medical emergency that required CPR. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced deceased on scene at 5 p.m.

One person was also transported to a nearby hospital following the crash. The Texas DPS is investigating the collision and TCSO is conducting an investigation into the death in custody.

An autopsy was completed on May 15, 2023, the results of which are pending.
