Identity of Decedent in Officer Involved Shooting

At 9:02 pm on Thursday, April 20, 2023, TCSO and Manor Police Department (MPD) responded to a 911 call reporting a man walking in the middle of the roadway, near a merging lane of travel, in the 10200 block of East US HWY 290.

At 9:06 pm, police and deputies received notification from the Austin Police Department of an attempted carjacking in which someone was stabbed by the suspect at 10095 East US 290 HWY Service Road Eastbound.

At 9:24 pm, a TCSO Deputy made contact with the subject, who was holding a knife and would not comply with instructions. Additional officers arrived, and the subject remained on the highway, non-compliant.

At 9:29 pm a TCSO deputy reported taser deployment to dispatch, then shots were reportedly fired. Both a TCSO Deputy and a MPD Officer fired their weapons. Life saving measures were attempted but were unsuccessful. The subject, Dimitri Amarillas, 25, of Austin, was pronounced deceased at 9:40 pm.

A full investigation is underway by the Texas Rangers. TCSO’s Criminal Investigations Division and TCSO Internal Affairs Unit are also conducting parallel investigations. The Texas Rangers is the lead agency in the investigation therefore, this is the last public update TCSO will offer. Both officers who used lethal force are on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
