Job Descriptions

This section contains the descriptions for the following positions hired by the Sheriff's Office. They include:  

Corrections Officer Certified Nursing Assistant
Deputy Sheriff Counselor
Dispatcher Registered Nurse / Charge Nurse
Security Coordinator Licensed Vocational Nurse
Office Specialist Senior  

Each position description will provide a description of the work performed as well as the minimum qualification requirements and special knowledge, skills and abilities required by the position. Applicants must meet the qualification requirements outlined in each of the position descriptions to be eligible for hire at the Sheriff's Office. The position description will also provide the starting salary range for the position and whether or not the position is eligible for any special pay (i.e. overtime, shift differential, etc.). Officer applicants who are hired (Corrections Officer, Deputy Sheriff) are eligible for the officer pay scale. The officer pay scale provides for yearly increases once the probationary period (12 months) has been completed. An officer may also be eligible to receive an additional pay increase for certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education (TCLEOSE).

 


Office Specialist Senior

Salary Information:
Salary: $1,751 to $ 2,458 per month 
Position is eligible for overtime.

Examples of work performed:
Performs general clerical duties as required such as: answering phones, data entry, filing, photocopying, faxing, etc. Reviews, validates and processes a wide variety of documents. May create and maintain manual and computerized records and files. Uses independent judgment on establishing priorities and then applying procedures to manage workload with minimal supervision. May be required to answer phone calls from the public and other County agencies. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively deal with internal and external Departments. Performs all other duties as may be assigned.

This position requires:
Standing, sitting, kneeling, stooping, lifting, bending, climbing, twisting upper body, walking, carrying large boxes, listening, talking, use of telephone and radio, exposure to computer monitor screens and repetitive data entry. Some assignments may require shift work or work on holidays. Some assignments may also include exposure to individuals with risk of illness.

Qualifiication Requirements:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School Graduation or G.E.D. Adequate typing skills (45 wpm with a high degree of accuracy). Certain positions require 55 wpm. Knowledge of PC-computer systems with standard word processing experience. A minimum of one year of responsible office/clerical experience. Must successfully pass all written and typing tests required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to perform the following: 1) communicate effectively both orally and in writing; 2) use electronic data communications; and 3) handle several items at one time, possible in a stressful situation. Applicant must be able to maintain a pleasant and courteous demeanor when dealing with other Sheriff's Office staff, the public and other outside agencies. Applicant must be able to maintain confidentiality of certain types of information.

Corrections Officer

Salary Information:
Cadet Corrections Salary: $2,812 per month (for first year)
Salary upon completion of first year Cadet Period: $3,023 per month

Summary of Function:  
Provides Corrections services involving the health, safety, and security of inmates and the public in a Corrections facility or program. Reports to a Sergeant, Corrections or other designated Supervisor.

Examples of work performed:
Books, classifies, transfers, transports, and releases inmates with attention to the health, safety, and security of other officers, inmates and the public. Conducts inspections and inmate searches. Reviews, completes, and processes official papers and documents. Conducts safety inspections and fire drills. Provides informal counseling to inmates. Intervenes and resolves crisis situations such as fights and medical emergencies. Conducts head counts. Serves meals. Assists with the personal needs of inmates, such as telephone calls, mail, visits. Monitors and assists visitors. May be assigned to classify inmates into appropriate housing areas or custody levels. May be assigned to plan, organize, and conduct inmate recreational programs. May be assigned to interview, investigate, and evaluate inmates with regard to eligibility for personal bond and make appropriate recommendations and follow-up. May be assigned to maintenance duties. Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

This position requires:
Standing, sitting, kneeling, stooping, lifting, bending, climbing, twisting upper body, walking running, driving, carrying, hearing, talking, exposure to outdoor conditions, qualifying with and carrying a weapon and the ability to take physical control of another person as needed; and exposure to: volatile or stressful situations, computer screens and individuals with risk of illness. Requires working rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. 

Qualifiication Requirements:
High School Graduation or its equivalent; Jailer certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) or the ability to successfully complete a certification course within twelve months of hire. Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment. Must successfully pass all written, physical, and psychological tests required.  

Preferred Qualifications:
At the time of application, completion of 12 semester hours at an accredited college or university with a 2.0 grade point average or better. Two years consecutive experience in corrections at a county jail, state or federal penal institution; or two years active United States military service may substitute for the college education requirement.  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of laws, departmental policies, rules, regulations, instructions, and correctional literature regarding the custody of person. Ability to: 1) understand and follow oral instructions; 2) write clear and concise reports; 3) maintain complete records as required; 4) meet established physical standards; 5) provide complete and accurate testimony of past facts and incidents; 6) communicate both verbally and in writing to professional standards; and 7) maintain confidentiality of certain types of information is also required. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and officials, inmates, and the public.

Certified Nursing Assistant

Salary Information:
Salary: $ 11.57 to $14.18 hourly.
(Commensurate with experience/education)

Summary of Function:
Under clinical and administrative supervision, assists in providing direct patient care and administering medication. Assists patients with activities of daily living. Functions under the close supervision of a physician, registered nurse or other similarly licensed health care practitioner. Performs basic patient care functions. Works in secure facilities.

Required Qualifications:
Education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED and six (6) months Certified Nursing Assistant or Medication Aide experience.

Special Requirements:
*current certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Medication Aide in the state of Texas.
*current CPR certification.

Preferred Requirements:
*bilingual in English/Spanish

Hours:
Full-time hours will vary based upon shift availability and will include work on weekends and holidays.

Counselor / Victim Services Counselor (SR)

Salary Information:
Salary: $ 2,386 to $ 3,064 per month
(Commensurate with experience/education)

Summary of Function:
Provides assessment, along with individual and group counseling (including crisis intervention counseling) to inmates. May provide counseling to correctional staff and families of inmates. Reports to Counseling Supervisor.

Examples of work performed:
Screens and evaluates inmates for psychiatric illness and potentially suicidal characteristics. Provides individual and group counseling to inmates regarding: mental and behavioral problems, substance abuse, rehabilitation, personal and family problems, AIDS, and adjustment to confinement. Provides crisis intervention services. Administers, scores and interprets sociological, psychological and vocational tests. Plans, supervises and provides rehabilitation services. Maintains security and safety procedures for inmates and staff. Provides counseling to corrections staff and inmate family members. Prepares treatment plans, progress notes, interview records. Maintains case files. Prepares various reports and statistical records. Performs all other duties as may be assigned.

This position requires:

Qualifiication Requirements:
Counselor I: Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences or a related field, plus two years experience. A Master’s degree may substitute for experience requirement.

Counselor II: Education and experience equivalent to a Master’s degree in counseling plus two years of counseling experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply counseling theory, practices and procedures. Good knowledge of correctional theory and practices; skills in human relations; ability to write clear and concise reports and to work and communicate effectively with employees, inmates, volunteers, community agencies, and the public. Must be willing to work shifts.

Deputy Sheriff

Salary Information:
Salary: $3,659 per month

Summary of Function:
Patrols assigned district enforcing local, state and federal laws and ordinances. Conducts preliminary investigative work and prepares accurate reports of incidents as they occur. Serves warrants and civil papers. Reports to a Sergeant or other designated supervisor.

Examples of work performed:
Patrols an assigned area, generally by vehicle, to prevent crimes and enforce laws and regulations. Responds to emergency calls and routine complaints and takes action as necessary. Issues traffic citations and directs traffic. Investigates traffic accidents and crimes against persons and property. Assists federal, state and local law enforcement officials. Keeps records of activities and makes reports concerning: crimes, complaints, accidents and investigations. Serves warrants and makes arrests. Apprehends and makes arrests. Apprehends and begins booking procedures on arrested individuals. May serve court papers including: writs, summons, subpoenas, and capias. May question witnesses and suspects and take statements and depositions. May gather and label evidence, take photographs and fingerprints, guard and transport prisoners, and testify in court. May patrol lake areas by boat. May address and work with community groups to promote good public relations and to inform citizens of police activities and crime prevention. May be responsible for animal control, especially related to cattle on roadways. May assist with Sheriff sales. Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

This position requires:
Standing, sitting, kneeling, stooping, lifting, bending, climbing, twisting upper body, walking, running, driving, carrying, hearing, speaking, exposure to outdoor conditions, qualifying with and carrying chemical, impact and deadly weapons. The position also requires ability to take physical control of another person as needed and exposure to: volatile or stressful situations, computer screens and individuals with risk of illness. Requires working rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifiication Requirements:
High school graduation or its equivalent. At the time of application must have a Basic Peace Officer certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education (TCLEOSE). Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment. Must successfully pass all written, physical and psychological tests required.

Preferred Qualifications:
At the time of application, if applicant has completed 12 semester hours at an accredited college or university with a 2.0 grade point average or better; or two years active United States military service; the applicant may substitute these for two years active service as a police officer.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

Extensive knowledge of laws, regulations and procedures governing custody of persons. Ability to read and understand departmental policies, rules, and regulations. An aptitude for Law Enforcement work including the ability to: 1) understand and follow oral instructions; 2) retain physical endurance and agility; 3) write clear and accurate reports; 4) analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective and reasonable course of action; 4) provide complete and accurate testimony of all past facts and incidents; 6) communicate verbally and in writing to professional standards; and 7) maintain confidentiality of certain types of information. Dispatcher - Telecommunications 9-1-1 Specialist

Salary Information:
Salary: $2,386to $2,865 per month

Summary of Function:
Answers incoming calls from the public or other Law Enforcement Units. Evaluates calls. Relays calls to the officers in the field. Keeps information on the location of officers and assists in record checks.

Examples of work performed:
Answers incoming telephone calls and radio reports. Evaluates and directs calls to the appropriate Officer or Agency. Performs computer-assisted and manual record checks for officers on individuals, locations, vehicles and other property (sometimes verifying warrants or reports of stolen property with the originating agency). Monitors and responds to radio traffic. Maintains current location and status of officers, various logs and computer data files (e.g. incident reports, stolen or repossessed property logs, wrecker rotation logs, maps, etc.). Enters information into the Texas and National Crime Information Computer Systems (TCIC/NCIC). Maintains equipment, work area and supply items. Performs all other duties as may be assigned.

This position requires:
Standing, sitting, kneeling, stooping, lifting, bending, climbing, twisting upper body, walking, running, carrying, listening, talking, use of telephone and radio, maintaining calm in stressful circumstances, continual exposure to computer monitor screens and repetitive data entry. Requires working rotating shift, weekends, and holidays. May require occasional contact with persons in custody.

Qualifiication Requirements:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School Graduation or G.E.D. One year experience in dispatching or an equivalent job is preferred. Must be able to type a minimum of 45 wpm with high degree of accuracy. Must successfully pass all written tests required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

Ability to operate radios, electronic data communications equipment and computers. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to handle several items at one time, possibly in a stressful situation. Must be able to maintain a pleasant and courteous demeanor when dealing with other employees, the general public and other outside agencies. Must be able to maintain confidentiality of certain types of information.

Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)

Salary Information:
Starting salary up to $3,517 per month (plus 15% shift differential)

Summary of Function:
Evaluates total health care need of patients and develops plans to meet those needs. Arranges for or provides medical treatment to inmates. Reports to Medical Section Supervisor.

Examples of work performed:
Responds to inmate medical needs and arranges for or provides treatment. Maintains security and safety procedures for inmates and staff. Provides health care instruction and counseling to inmates. Assists physicians, psychiatrists and dentists as needed. Processes inmates into the jail by screening and evaluation of medical and mental histories as needed. Maintains inventory of medical supplies (including drugs) and maintains security control of these items. Fills and dispenses medicines and supervises self-administration. Answers inmate and staff inquiries. Maintains medical charts and records. Maintains the cleanliness of the work area. Performs clerical duties, such as records filing. Sets appointments for the inmates to see a physician, psychiatrist or dentist. Makes frequent observations of medical cells. Performs all other duties as may be assigned.

This position requires:

Registered Nurse (RN)

Salary Information:
RN - Starting salary up to $4,931 per month (plus 15% shift differential)

RN Charge Nurse – Starting salary up to $5,277 per month (plus 15% shift differential) 

Summary of Function:
Evaluates total health care need of patients and develops plans to meet those needs. Arranges for or provides medical treatment to inmates. Reports to Medical Section Supervisor.

Responds to inmate medical needs and arranges for or provides treatment. Maintains security and safety procedures for inmates and staff. Provides health care instruction and counseling to inmates. Assists physicians, psychiatrists and dentists as needed. Processes inmates into the jail by screening and evaluation of medical and mental histories as needed. Maintains inventory of medical supplies (including drugs) and maintains security control of these items. Fills and dispenses medicines and supervises self-administration. Performs all other duties as may be assigned.

Security Coordinator

Salary Information:
Salary: $2,006 to $2,814 per month 

Summary of Function:
Monitors and operates all security systems within the jail complexes including: the alarm system, base radio, cameras and electronic panel controlling access to the complex. Maintains accurate inventory of jail keys. Updates and maintains complete inmate rosters and a daily activity log. Performs various clerical duties such as: answering the telephone, sorting and distributing mail, and accepting money and property for inmates. 

Examples of work performed:
Operates base radio within the jail complexes and maintains contact with all jail posts. Monitors radio for routine and emergency transmissions. Monitors alarm systems in the jail complexes, courthouse and the annex and dispatches assistance as needed. Operates electronic control panel for access to units. Monitors security cameras to track normal inmate movement and identify security violations in all areas, including multi-purpose and isolation areas. Maintains accurate inmate count for each unit. Coordinates inmate visits with post officers and receptionists. Generates computerized inmate roster report. Answers incoming telephone calls. Provides assistance to inmates and public as needed. Accepts money and property for inmates. Performs all other duties as may be assigned. 

This position requires:
Standing, sitting, kneeling, stooping, lifting, bending, climbing, twisting upper body, walking, running, carrying, listening, talking, use of telephone and radio, and exposure to computer monitors. Requires working rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Exposure to individuals with risk of illness is possible. 

Qualifiication Requirements:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School Graduation or G.E.D. Must be able to complete a basic correctional training course after hired into position. Must successfully pass all written tests required. Adequate typing skills (30 wpm with a high degree of accuracy) is also required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Good knowledge of the methods and procedures used in operating jail security systems. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to operate typewriters, computer terminals, radios and various electronic communications equipment. Ability to handle several items at one time, possibly in a stressful situation. Must be able to maintain a pleasant, courteous demeanor when dealing with other employees, the general public and other outside agencies. Must be able to maintain confidentiality of certain types of information.
