Each applicant seeking employment with the Sheriff's Office must successfully complete a multistep hiring process as outlined below. Various positions will require specialized steps (as identified in bold text), based on the unique requirements of that position.

Step 1: Complete the Pre-Employment Screening Checklist
   The Pre-Employment Screening Checklist will determine if you meet the minimum requirements set forth by the Travis County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE). The Pre-Employment Screening Checklist will be completed on site and reviewed by the Personnel Office. If you meet the minimum qualifications you will be scheduled for testing.

NOTE: If you reside outside the Austin City limits you may mail in the Pre-Employment Screening Checklist. However, it will have to be notarized. If you live within the surrounding area, it would benefit you to apply in person so we can better assist you.

Step 2: Complete Required Tests
   Once the Pre-Employment Screening Checklist has been received and reviewed, the applicant will be scheduled for testing.

At the appointed testing time all applicants will be required to:
* Be on time at the testing site. Anyone arriving after the scheduled time will not be allowed to test.
n Bring a valid form of picture identification. Acceptable forms of identification include: Texas or other Resident State Driver’s License (with current address), State Identification Cards or a current Military Identification Card.
* Bring doctor’s medical release or be prepared to sign medical waiver (Officer Applicants Only). These releases are required to ensure the applicant’s safety during the physical testing. A doctor’s release must be signed by a medical doctor.

A brief description of each test (excluding position specific) is outlined below.
* Vocabulary Test. For this test, the applicant will be required to look at a word in context, and answer the multiple choice question with the best choice. There are 45 questions with a 20-minute time limit for this test.
* Reading Comprehension Test. For this test, the applicant will be required to read several paragraphs and answer multiple choice questions pertaining to the paragraphs. There are 48 questions with a 35 minute time limit for this test.
* Typing Test. For office specialist, security coordinator and dispatch positions, a typing test will be administered. Applicants must meet the minimum required words per minute (wpm) as outlined in the position description to be considered eligible for hire.
* Position Specific Test. For certain positions, position-specific tests may be administered. These tests will be designed to assess an individual’s response to a typical situation that would be encountered in their position.
* Job Specific Test. This test is for officer candidates only. An applicant must complete a job specific course designed to simulate actual job functions. A doctor's release or medical waiver will be required prior to taking this test.

NOTE: Failure to meet the minimum requirements for any of the tests listed above will disqualify an applicant for a period up to one year.

Step 3: Complete application packet and other documentation required
   Upon successful completion of the Vocabulary/Reading Comprehension Test and/or Job Specific Test the applicant will be issued an application packet. An application packet consists of the following: Travis County Application, I-9 Form, Travis County Sheriff’s Office Application, and an Applicant Information Form. The applicant will also have to provide original documentation or certified copies along with the application packet of the following documents if applicable: birth certificate, Military Form DD-214 (Member 4 Copy), a valid driver’s license (displaying current address) or a stated identification card (displaying current address), Proof of Insurance, educational related documentation (High School transcripts/diploma, College transcripts or GED), proof of professional licensing (medical, counselor or maintenance), proof of certification (correction officer, peace officer or telecommunicator), social security card, and divorce decree (if applicable).

NOTE: Applicants may apply for multiple positions by using one application packet. However, you must meet each positions individual requirement. Incomplete application packets will not be processed.

Step 4: Background Investigation (including interview with investigator)
   Once an applicant has successfully completed testing, an interview will be scheduled with a background investigator to review your application packet. At the conclusion of the background investigation, the investigator will forward the results of the background investigation as well as any additional information gleaned in the interview. If the background investigation meets the Travis County Sheriff’s Office standards, the applicant will proceed with an interview before the Oral Review Board.

NOTE: A complete background investigation will be conducted on all applicants applying with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office to determine suitability.

Step 5: Interview with Oral Review Board
   Applicants who successfully pass the background investigation are then scheduled for interviews with an oral review board. During the board, an applicant will be asked a series of general and situational questions regarding the position for which they apply. The applicant must pass the Oral Review Board in order to be placed on an eligibility list. Applicants may apply for multiple positions; however, they must pass a separate Oral Review Board for each position applied for in order to qualify for that particular eligibility list. For example, an individual who applies for an office specialist and a security coordinator position must interview and successfully pass two separate oral review boards (office specialist, security coordinator) in order to be on the eligibility lists for each position.

Step 6: Placement on an Eligibility List
   Successful applicants will be placed on a list, from which selection for employment will be made. Candidates listed may be moved on, or removed from the list after a six month period, per Sheriff’s Office general policy and procedures. Applicants wishing to remain on the eligibility list after six months must notify the Sheriff’s Office in writing of their intent.

Step 7: Offer Of Employment Made, as an appropriate position becomes available
   Upon successful completion of step 6, applicants will receive an offer of employment by the Sheriff as appropriate positions(s) become available. For officer applicants only, the offer is conditional upon the successful completion of medical and psychological examinations by licensed professionals as outlined below.
n Complete Medical Examination. Officer applicants selected for duty must be examined by a licensed physician. The physician must provide written documentation certifying that the applicant is found to be physically sound and free from any circumstances, which may adversely affect the performance of their duty. Applicants must also be free from any trace of drug dependency or illegal drug use, which shall be determined by medical testing.
n Persons selected from the eligibility list for hire are instructed to report to the Travis County Jail contract physician immediately before hire for their physical examination and drug testing.
n Complete Psychological Examination. Officer applicants must also be examined by a department approved, licensed psychologist or psychiatrist. The psychologist or psychiatrist must provide written documentation certifying that the applicant is found to be emotionally and psychologically healthy to perform the duties as required.

Note: Counselor applicants may also be asked to submit to examination by a department approved psychologist or psychiatrist for a determination of fitness to counsel in a correctional/institutional setting.

Step 8: Receive Start Date and Complete In-processing
   The applicant will be contacted to inform them of their start date. The in-processing procedure consists of the following:
* Attendance at mandatory benefits orientation with the county and completion of appropriate benefits paperwork;
* Completion of appropriate Personnel, TCLEOSE and other paperwork;
* Procurement of Sheriff’s Office identification card;
* Meeting the Sheriff; and
* Procurement of appropriate uniforms, equipment, manuals, etc. with Supply.

NOTE: There will also be mandatory introductory training scheduled. The length of training depends on the position accepted.
