Chief Deputy Jim Sylvester was born and raised in Houston, Texas and is a 3rd generation law enforcement/corrections professional. He began his law enforcement career with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office on May 1, 1986. Prior to joining TCSO, he was a corrections officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, where he promoted to corporal in just two short years. He graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.

Chief Sylvester is an avid speaker and has taken a personal interest in domestic violence awareness. During his service as a detective in the Family Violence Unit, he worked with various state legislators in passing numerous bills which called for tougher sanctions on those who threatened or committed acts of family violence.

He enjoys family life with his wife of 30 years. They have three children. Chief Sylvester will tell you his work ethic was learned through his involvement with the Boy Scouts of America, which he was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.

On May 1st Chief Sylvester will have 30 years in the profession and has been Chief Deputy since 2006.
