On November 15, 2015, at 3:45pm, a man who had been an inmate in the Travis County Jail was pronounced deceased. The man was arrested on November 8, 2015, at 12:24am, after it was learned that he had a warrant for his arrest during a family violence investigation. The warrant was from McLennan County for Felony Credit Card Abuse. The Bond was set at $15,000.00.

On November 10, 2015, at about 2am, Corrections Officers found the man unresponsive in his cell during a routine cell check. He was identified as;

Elijah Ashbey, Date of Birth 2-25-1994, of McGregor, Texas. Officers called a medical emergency and started CPR. Austin/Travis County EMS was also called to the scene and transported him to the hospital. At about 9:30am authorities from McLennan County withdrew their warrant and Mr. Ashbey was released from custody.

An investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit, Internal Affairs Unit and the Medical Examiner’s Office is ongoing. The autopsy was held on November 17, 2015 and although the final report will not be completed for several weeks, detectives confirmed that the initial investigation indicates that Mr. Ashbey used a ligature made from items in his cell to cause his own death.
