Nelda (Sally) Pena was born in the small southern town of Falfurrias Texas in 1964. Sally graduated from Falfurrias High School in 1983. In 1985, she moved to Travis County were she continued her education at Austin Community College.

Captain Pena joined the Travis County Sheriff's Office in July 1991 as a corrections officer. She has over 21 years of correctional experience. She worked a number of assignments including Prisoner Transportation Unit, Central Booking Facility (CBF) and Buildings 3, 5-9.

In 1997, Sally briefly left TCSO to join the Austin Police Department. Sally exceled in her new career and graduated from Austin Police Department Academy.

Sally quickly realized that the Travis County Sherriff Department was her real home, and in 1998, she rejoined the TCSO family. In 2005, Sally was promoted to the rank of Sergeant where she worked in Building 3, 5-9 and Central Booking Facility.

Sally worked closely with the Chain-of-Command and her staff to fulfill the TCSO Mission, Vision and Values of the agency as well as provided continual guidance to all staff.

In March 2010, Sally was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. As a new Lieutenant, Sally was assigned to TCJ and tasked with the duty of changing the culture and revitalizing the staff and the building as well as updating the technology. A year later she was transferred to CBF to accomplish the same goal.

On March 7, 2014, Sally was promoted to the rank of Captain. She is currently assigned over Building 12 at the Travis County Correctional Complex. Sally is a Graduate of the National Jail Leadership Command Academy and she holds a TCLEOSE Master Peace Officer and Jailer Certifications and is a FBI-LEEDA Leadership Trilogy Award Recipient.

Sally has strong work ethics and believes in leading by example. When she is not a work, she enjoys spending quality time relaxing with family and close friends.
