FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 18, 2020

Travis County Deputy Killed in Collision

At 6:49 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a collision in the 7700-block of FM 2244. The driver of a vehicle that rolled off the road was identified as Sr. Deputy Christopher Korzilius.

Sr. Deputy Korzilius, 32, was assigned to the VICE unit at TCSO and was driving his unmarked unit, a Ford Escape, at the time of the collision. Korzilius joined TCSO in June 2016 and spent most of his time working night shift patrol in eastern Travis County. He promoted to Sr. Deputy two years after joining the agency and joined the VICE unit in January 2020

Sr. Deputy Korzilius was one of several members of the TCSO family honored just over a week ago at the agency’s annual awards ceremony. Korzilius and five others were awarded the Commendation Bar after responding to a dynamic “shots fired” call in July 2018. He also received several other awards and commendations, including:
  - Employee of the Quarter just seven months after being hired
  - Letters of Commendation and Appreciation from supervisors and colleagues
  - Victim Services Deputy of the Year

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank ATCEMS, ESD3, ESD 9 and ESD 10 for their quick response, the Travis County Constable’s Office Precinct 3 for assistance in directing traffic and the Austin Police Department motors units for assisting TCSO motors units in escorting Sr. Deputy Korzilius to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The crash is being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety. They are being assisted by the TCSO HEAT (Highway Enforcement and Accident Team) unit.

Sr. Deputy Korzilius is the eighth deputy with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office to be killed in the line of duty. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced at a later date.
