Identity of Man Who Died on Lake Travis

At 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2018, a Travis County Sheriff’s Office Lake Patrol unit responded to an Assist Fire Department call for an unconscious man who was pulled out of Lake Travis.

Witnesses say JUAN MALDONADO, 46, of Cedar Park, became distressed in the water. After seeing Maldonado go under, they were able to pull him back up and onto their boat. He was not wearing a life jacket.

Lake Patrol Deputies were on scene within four minutes and moved Maldonado onto their boat. Deputies performed CPR while taking him to Mansfield Dam Park, where life saving measures were continued by ATCEMS. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and Maldonado was pronounced deceased at 8:39 p.m.

The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Sunday, August 19. The final results are still pending toxicology.

Maldonado is the fourth person to die on Lake Travis this year. Two other missing swimmers have not been found.

Manuel Salas, 53 of Elgin was reported missing on May 5, 2018 in an area of Lake Travis near Mansfield Dam Park.

Rachel Kathleen Scott, 25 of Round Rock was reported missing between Starnes Island and Volente Beach on May 19, 2018.

Both are still missing.

Diego Humberto Cerda-Acosta, 30 of Austin was reported missing in the water near Bob Wentz Park on May 27, 2018. His body was recovered the morning of May 28, 2018.

Ricardo Sierra Martinez, 27 of Mexico was reported missing in the water near Bob Wentz Park on June 10, 2018. His body was recovered the morning of June 12, 2018.

Luke Fashaw, 36 of San Antonio was reported missing in the water in the Devil’s Hollow area on July 28, 2018. His body was recovered the same day.
