The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office has positively identified the man who drowned Thursday January 19, 2017 at Drapers Cove on Lake Travis as
CODY QUINCY MAY, 31 from West Haven, CT
On January 19, 2017 at 4:14 PM, TCSO received a report of a missing swimmer in Drapers Cove. Deputies who responded to the scene were informed by witnesses that several of May’s children were playing on a raft near the shoreline. Mr. May began walking out to the raft when he suddenly stepped off into deep water. Mr. May immediately began to struggle and called for help. A fisherman in a
nearby boat witnessed what happened and sped over to assist May. Efforts by the fisherman were unsuccessful. May was unable to grab the floatation device offered to him. He went under and never resurfaced.
Travis County Fire Rescue, Austin Travis County EMS, StarFlight and Travis County Sheriff’s Office engaged in a rescue mission immediately upon arrival at the scene. After 30 minutes, the mission was reclassified to Recovery.
At approximately 10:00 AM on January 20, 2017, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, searching the area where the fisherman last reported seeing May, located the body submerged in twelve feet of water. The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the Manner of Death, Accidental and the Cause of Death, Freshwater Drowning. May and his family had been new residents of Austin for one week prior to his death.
