Inmate Dies At Travis County Correctional Complex
On August 17, 2015, at 8:57am, an inmate was found unresponsive in the shower. Corrections
Officers called Jail Medical Staff and Austin/Travis County EMS for assistance but, despite their
efforts to save her, she was pronounced deceased at 9:49am.
The inmate was identified as;
Athena Covarrubias, Date of Birth 6-10-1975,of Austin.
She had been in custody since she was arrested by the Austin Police Department on 8-
5-2015, for three warrants from Williamson County;
Bond Forfeiture, Possession of Controlled Substance, Felony, No Bond
Bond Forfeiture Possession of Marijuana, Misdemeanor, Bond $2000.00
Bond Forfeiture Driving While License Invalid, Misdemeanor, Bond $1500
and one new charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Bond $5000.00.
The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office, along with the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes
Unit and Internal Affairs Unit were called to the scene, which is usual for these cases.
Preliminary findings show that there is no evidence of foul play so Detectives are waiting for the
ME’s autopsy report for a determination of the cause of death.
