An inmate at the Travis County Jail died at the hospital after being released from the jail on March 6th.
The man is identified as, Roberto Serrano-Garcia, Date of Birth 3-21-1964, of Austin. He had been arrested by the Austin Police Department on March 3, 2015 and initially charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance. The Police Department dropped their charges on March 5th and a Federal Detainer was placed on him to replace the Police Department charge. He also had an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer as well.
On March 5th, at 745pm Mr. Serrano-Garcia was found in his cell. He was not responsive and it appeared that he was attempting to take his life by hanging himself. He was transported to the hospital by Austin/Travis County EMS.
On March 6th, because all detainers were withdrawn from federal authorities, he was released from custody.
This morning, March 26, 2015, the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office notified Sheriff’s Detectives that Mr. Serrano-Garcia was pronounced deceased at the Hospital at 6:30pm on March 25th. The cause of death appears to be suicide by hanging, however, they are awaiting toxicology tests before making a final ruling.
