The Travis County Sheriff’s Office embraces the philosophy of Community Policing. With this
strategy, officers patrol the same districts during their tour of duty in an effort to become familiar with the people and the surroundings.
   This style of policing allows the officers and the citizens to form a partnership that not only addresses crime, but also has a positive impact on quality of life issues.
   The K-9 Unit, which operates out of the Central Command’s Ruiz Building, conducts searches in response of a variety of situations:
 * Search for hidden suspects
 * Apprehend fleeing suspects
 * Search for lost persons
 * Search for evidence
 * Protect the handler, other officers and citizens
 * Clear vehicles after a high-risk felony stop
 * Conduct public demonstrations
 * Search for and detect the odor of narcotics and/or explosives
 * Serve as a visual deterrant for crime
   The service dog is often ill-perceived as a vicious, snarling animal. K-9 partners are occasionally needed to apprehend criminals by biting, but it's true designed use is to locate suspects who are hiding. Biting is only a very small facet of what the dog can be used for in law enforcement. The vast majority of K9 deployments results in no one being bitten. As a 'force' tool, the dog is very unique in that the dog can be re-called and stopped unlike a swing of a baton, a spray of chemical agents or a bullet when fired by a gun, which cannot be stopped while in motion.
