Major Mark Sawa has been employed with the Travis County Sheriffs Office for more than 21 years. He is a graduate from the first Travis County Sheriff’s Academy in 1986 and served as Deputy Sheriff in the Patrol Division for more than five years until he was transferred to the Criminal Investigative Division. As a Detective, Mark worked in what is now known as the Major Crimes Division and investigated violent crimes committed against persons. Also during this period in his career, Mark served as a member of the SWAT Team as an entry Team member.
He was promoted to Sergeant in 1995 where he served in the Patrol Division and as the Sergeant over the SWAT Team. Mark was promoted to Lieutenant and served in the Patrol Division and as the Lieutenant over the SWAT Team, the Crisis Negotiation Team, the Crisis Intervention Team and the Narcotics Unit. He was promoted to Captain in 2007 where he oversaw the Transportation Division, Central Command Security, the Training Academy, the Crisis Intervention Team, Professional Services and Community Outreach. Major Sawa was promoted to Major in January 2008 where he currently oversees the Administration & Support Division of the Sheriffs Office. He is an active member of several Police and Tactical Associations and is an adjunct Instructor with the Travis County Sheriffs Academy.
He has received the following accolades:

■ Recipient of the Meritorious Service Plaque and Officer of the Year by People Against Violent Crime and For the Love of Christie organizations (1996)

■ Outstanding Officer of the Year by the VFW Post 3377 (1999)
