Major Darren Long was born in Dallas in 1962. He moved to Austin with his family in 1971 and has lived here ever since. He mainly grew up in south Austin and attended public schools. He also attended Southwest Texas State University and Austin Community College.
Darren joined the Travis County Sheriff’s Office in 1987 as a Corrections Officer in the Corrections Bureau. He worked in various jails including the old jail above the County Courthouse and Booking. In 1991, he transferred to the Law Enforcement Bureau and worked a number of assignments including Patrol Services, Narcotics, Major Crimes, SWAT and Environmental crimes. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2001 and was assigned back to Patrol Services and then to the Crisis Intervention/Negotiation Team. In 2005, Darren was promoted to Captain by newly elected Sheriff Greg Hamilton and was assigned to the East Command. In 2006, he was promoted to Major and was assigned to the Administration & Support Bureau.
In 2008, Major Long moved over the Corrections Bureau. He is a graduate of Bill Blackwood’s Law Enforcement Institute of Texas Leadership Command College (Class #54) and the FBI National Academy (229th Session with 4.0 GPA). He holds a TCLEOSE Master Peace Officer’s and Master Jailer Proficiency licenses.
Darren is a devoted Christian family man, and he has been married to his lovely wife for 16 years. He enjoys coaching both daughters’ soccer teams and occasionally plays a round of golf.
Major Long is firmly committed to serving his community and is optimistic about the future.
