Captain Bennie Cureton was raised in Odessa, Texas, and graduated from Permian High School “MOJO” in 1970. He was quickly drafted and entered the service of the United States Navy. Upon being honorably discharged in 1974, he joined the Odessa Police Dept. He also began his formal education at the University of Texas at Permian Basin.

In 1979, Captain Cureton moved to Midland and went to work for Sheriff Dallas Smith as a corrections officer. Within the first two years he was promoted to Sergeant. He later transferred to Criminal Investigations and within a year was asked to return to the jail and was promoted to Captain. In 1982, Cureton was named Officer of the Year by the Midland Jaycees. After two years, and during the sheriff’s re-election campaign, he was asked to take the position of Chief Deputy.

In 1986, Cureton moved to Austin and went to work for Sheriff Doyne Bailey as a corrections officer. Within eighteen months he was promoted to Sergeant. During his tenure, Cureton has assisted in the creation of the Central Booking Facility; Courthouse Security; and Health Services Building for Travis County. In 1995, he was awarded Officer of the Year by Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas (CLEAT) and in 1996 awarded Officer of the Year by Travis County Sheriff Officer Association (TCSOA). He was transferred to Central Command Security in 2003 and appointed by Travis County Commissioners’ Court to the Security Advisory Committee. In 2006, Cureton was awarded Officer of the Year by Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton and in January 2008 was promoted to Captain and transferred to the Travis County Correctional Complex at Del Valle.
